[00:00:00.080 --> 00:00:01.040] Hey, this is Festies.
[00:00:01.040 --> 00:00:02.720] Welcome back to Female Found World.
[00:00:02.880 --> 00:00:05.920] We have to talk about Hailey Beaver's beauty brand, Rode.
[00:00:05.920 --> 00:00:10.160] They were just acquired by ELF for a billion dollars.
[00:00:10.160 --> 00:00:14.400] And this is a story that is just dominating every single feed.
[00:00:14.400 --> 00:00:16.720] Every time I pick up my phone, you guys are in my DMs.
[00:00:16.720 --> 00:00:18.080] I'm seeing it in the group chat.
[00:00:18.080 --> 00:00:27.600] And I wanted to unpack this and what we can learn, what it means for those of us out here trying to build businesses, trying to get paid, trying to build a bit of wealth for ourselves.
[00:00:27.600 --> 00:00:34.560] Because the brand has only been around for three years and I just think it is such an interesting story.
[00:00:34.560 --> 00:00:50.640] So first of all, let's just talk about the deal and dive into that a little bit more because you know you see the headlines a billion dollars and yes that is what they're getting for the sale but that means 600 million dollars in cash then they get 200 million dollars in e.l.f.
[00:00:50.720 --> 00:01:51.120] cosmetic shares and another 200 million dollars if road hits some milestones over the next few years so it's not it's not a billion dollars upfront cash right now that's kind of how the deal is structured and we also know that road did 212 million dollars in net sales over the last financial year so when i look at the math and think about okay how are beauty brands like road getting valued right now that means that the valuation is about four times the last 12 months of sales or like 3.8 to be more specific and i think that's very interesting for those of us out here building beauty brands obviously this doesn't mean haley is getting a billion dollars or like even you know 600 million dollars she's got two co-founders they have investors but let's say and i am spitballing here i'm speculating but let's say she has 15 of the business which i would say is definitely at the higher end for this kind of celebrity deal that's 90 million cash before tax plus stock and the potential for future payouts if road hits those milestones that e.l.f.
[00:01:51.120 --> 00:01:51.920] has set.
[00:01:51.920 --> 00:02:11.320] I'm also curious about why this particular celebrity brand just catapulted to success so quickly and what they did right because so many celebrity brands that we see out there seem to flop and one number really stuck out to me when I was reading through the press release that ELF dropped about this partnership.
[00:02:11.320 --> 00:02:52.120] They said that Rode is the number one skincare brand in earned media value or they were in 2024 and that they grew by 367% year over year in earned media value and earned media value that just literally means like people talking about you that you haven't paid for so not ads you know that's might be PR press organic that kind of thing and that's really interesting because that is the Hailey Bieber effect and I dug into their website traffic they're getting about 1.2 million people to the site every month and 45% of that is like just people typing in road.com or road skin.com or whatever their URL is.
[00:02:52.120 --> 00:02:57.160] 33% of that is organic traffic and then 8% is paid.
[00:02:57.160 --> 00:03:07.320] So I think that just kind of speaks to the impact that someone like Hailey Bieber being associated with the beauty brand can have for visibility and for demand.
[00:03:07.320 --> 00:03:09.800] The CEO at Rode, this I thought was interesting.
[00:03:09.800 --> 00:03:16.040] The CEO at Rode is actually the same guy who led the IPO of Jessica Alba's business, The Honest Company.
[00:03:16.040 --> 00:03:22.040] And when they IPO'd, it was at a $1.44 billion valuation.
[00:03:22.040 --> 00:03:31.880] His name is Nick Vlahos and he went on the Glossy podcast a couple of years ago to just share his playbook on building brands that can stand the test of time.
[00:03:31.880 --> 00:03:34.200] And the episode itself is pretty long.
[00:03:34.200 --> 00:03:35.880] It's pretty dense.
[00:03:35.880 --> 00:03:39.320] And so no judgment if you cannot be bothered listening to the whole thing.
[00:03:39.320 --> 00:03:47.200] I'll just share some of the key stuff that he said on the episode because you can bet that is what they're rolling out at Rode as well.
[00:03:47.520 --> 00:03:53.760] So, one of the things that he said is really important is scaling a DDC business into an omni-channel business.
[00:03:53.760 --> 00:03:55.440] And we've seen this happen with Rode.
[00:03:55.440 --> 00:03:59.920] They built up this really strong brand by really controlling everything.
[00:03:59.920 --> 00:04:03.280] They had all sales going through their website, it was all direct.
[00:04:03.280 --> 00:04:11.760] And then, after a few years in the last month, they've announced that they're going to be launching into all Sephora US and Canada stores in the fall.
[00:04:11.760 --> 00:04:16.080] And then they're going to roll out into Sephora UK by the end of the year.
[00:04:16.080 --> 00:04:23.280] Another thing that the CEO says that he does is prioritizing investment in brand, and that obviously makes sense as well.
[00:04:23.280 --> 00:04:30.160] We know that consumers are not just buying products, they are buying into brands and being a part of something.
[00:04:30.160 --> 00:04:33.280] And I think that is, of course, something Rode has done really, really well.
[00:04:33.280 --> 00:04:41.760] Investing in international expansion, he said, is really important, which is interesting because Rode is not super available internationally at the moment.
[00:04:41.760 --> 00:04:44.880] So, we can just bet that that's going to be happening.
[00:04:44.880 --> 00:04:47.280] And then, another thing he said is investing in vertical integration.
[00:04:47.280 --> 00:04:55.600] So, that basically just means like owning your suppliers or your retail locations so that you can have greater control over your supply chain.
[00:04:55.600 --> 00:04:58.960] Okay, business besties, let's switch gears for a second.
[00:04:58.960 --> 00:05:04.400] Real quick, I want to talk to you about this season's presenting sponsor, Vistaprint.
[00:05:04.400 --> 00:05:11.600] They are sponsoring this entire season of the Female Founder World podcast, and we love a supportive sponsor.
[00:05:11.600 --> 00:05:23.680] So much so that we're actually working with Vistaprint ourselves to create the merch and all of those beautiful event perks that you know and love from our in-real life Female Founder World events.
[00:05:23.680 --> 00:05:38.920] If you haven't heard of Vistaprint, here's what you need to know: Vistaprint helps all kinds of business owners print all kinds of marketing products like super professional business cards, fun merch, eye-catching flyers and brochures, and a whole bunch more.
[00:05:38.920 --> 00:05:40.760] And it's all completely custom.
[00:05:40.760 --> 00:05:42.840] So you can do whatever you want.
[00:05:42.840 --> 00:05:46.520] Whatever you're imagining right now, Vistaprint can print it.
[00:05:46.520 --> 00:05:53.400] And if you're wondering if you're ready to be a designer girly, the easy-to-use website makes it super simple.
[00:05:53.400 --> 00:05:57.720] Plus, they have designers on hand to help you if you really need it.
[00:05:57.720 --> 00:06:07.560] Right now, Vistaprint is giving all female Founder World podcast listeners a little something 25% off your first order at vistaprint.com.
[00:06:07.560 --> 00:06:13.480] Use the code FFW25 at checkout and step up your branding game.
[00:06:13.480 --> 00:06:16.360] We've put a link in the show notes if you want to learn more.
[00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:19.560] If you want to keep talking about this, let's jump into the group chat.
[00:06:19.560 --> 00:06:21.640] I'll put the link in the show notes to download the app.
[00:06:21.640 --> 00:06:23.400] It's free to be in there.
[00:06:23.400 --> 00:06:30.840] I am so fascinated by just the absolute rocket ship that is this brand and how quickly it's grown.
[00:06:30.840 --> 00:06:31.560] And you know what?
[00:06:31.560 --> 00:06:37.560] I've seen a lot of comments come in and a couple of DMs as well just pulling up the Nepo baby line.
[00:06:37.560 --> 00:06:39.560] Like, yes, Hailey Bieber is famous.
[00:06:39.560 --> 00:06:41.240] She's got insane privilege.
[00:06:41.240 --> 00:06:43.880] Justin Bieber is her husband, all of these things.
[00:06:43.880 --> 00:06:48.360] And we could spend our time and energy talking about that, but we all know that.
[00:06:48.360 --> 00:06:53.640] And so instead, I think it's actually much more useful to look at this and think, what can I get out of this story?
[00:06:53.640 --> 00:06:56.920] What can I learn from the other co-founders, from the CEO?
[00:06:56.920 --> 00:07:00.200] What can I take away as I'm building my own business?
[00:07:00.200 --> 00:07:02.840] And what does that mean for the rest of us out here?
[00:07:02.840 --> 00:07:04.840] If you liked this episode, please drop a review.
[00:07:04.840 --> 00:07:10.040] I literally get a notification on my phone every time one of you leaves a nice review and it makes my day.
[00:07:10.040 --> 00:07:11.640] Chat to you next time.
[00:07:11.960 --> 00:07:19.760] I just wanted to jump in and end the show with a quick thank you and shout out to all of our paid Business Bestie subscribers.
[00:07:19.760 --> 00:07:28.320] Business Besties bypass literally years of networking by getting access to all of the people that you need to build your dream business.

Prompt 2: Key Takeaways
Now please extract the key takeaways from the transcript content I provided.
Extract the most important key takeaways from this part of the conversation. Use a single sentence statement (the key takeaway) rather than milquetoast descriptions like "the hosts discuss...".
Limit the key takeaways to a maximum of 3. The key takeaways should be insightful and knowledge-additive.
IMPORTANT: Return ONLY valid JSON, no explanations or markdown. Ensure:
- All strings are properly quoted and escaped
- No trailing commas
- All braces and brackets are balanced
Format: {"key_takeaways": ["takeaway 1", "takeaway 2"]}
Prompt 3: Segments
Now identify 2-4 distinct topical segments from this part of the conversation.
For each segment, identify:
- Descriptive title (3-6 words)
- START timestamp when this topic begins (HH:MM:SS format)
- Double check that the timestamp is accurate - a timestamp will NEVER be greater than the total length of the audio
- Most important Key takeaway from that segment. Key takeaway must be specific and knowledge-additive.
- Brief summary of the discussion
IMPORTANT: The timestamp should mark when the topic/segment STARTS, not a range. Look for topic transitions and conversation shifts.
Return ONLY valid JSON. Ensure all strings are properly quoted, no trailing commas:
{
"segments": [
{
"segment_title": "Topic Discussion",
"timestamp": "01:15:30",
"key_takeaway": "main point from this segment",
"segment_summary": "brief description of what was discussed"
}
]
}
Timestamp format: HH:MM:SS (e.g., 00:05:30, 01:22:45) marking the START of each segment.
Now scan the transcript content I provided for ACTUAL mentions of specific media titles:
Find explicit mentions of:
- Books (with specific titles)
- Movies (with specific titles)
- TV Shows (with specific titles)
- Music/Songs (with specific titles)
DO NOT include:
- Websites, URLs, or web services
- Other podcasts or podcast names
IMPORTANT:
- Only include items explicitly mentioned by name. Do not invent titles.
- Valid categories are: "Book", "Movie", "TV Show", "Music"
- Include the exact phrase where each item was mentioned
- Find the nearest proximate timestamp where it appears in the conversation
- THE TIMESTAMP OF THE MEDIA MENTION IS IMPORTANT - DO NOT INVENT TIMESTAMPS AND DO NOT MISATTRIBUTE TIMESTAMPS
- Double check that the timestamp is accurate - a timestamp will NEVER be greater than the total length of the audio
- Timestamps are given as ranges, e.g. 01:13:42.520 --> 01:13:46.720. Use the EARLIER of the 2 timestamps in the range.
Return ONLY valid JSON. Ensure all strings are properly quoted and escaped, no trailing commas:
{
"media_mentions": [
{
"title": "Exact Title as Mentioned",
"category": "Book",
"author_artist": "N/A",
"context": "Brief context of why it was mentioned",
"context_phrase": "The exact sentence or phrase where it was mentioned",
"timestamp": "estimated time like 01:15:30"
}
]
}
If no media is mentioned, return: {"media_mentions": []}

[00:06:37.560 --> 00:06:39.560] Like, yes, Hailey Bieber is famous.
[00:06:39.560 --> 00:06:41.240] She's got insane privilege.
