[00:03:04.280 --> 00:03:16.600] After briefly touching on the scientific method, the rest of the semester is a whirlwind tour of the major concepts in biology: molecules, cells, genetics, organisms, and evolution.
[00:03:16.920 --> 00:03:26.520] One of the most popular textbooks is over 800 pages long for a single semester for students who don't want to be scientists when they grow up.
[00:03:27.480 --> 00:03:41.240] I never liked this baby bio approach, and I was always searching for something better, trying out different textbooks, labs, case studies, and frequently using issues relevant to students' lives to teach important concepts.

[00:04:34.720 --> 00:04:53.040] By chance, I stumbled upon a quote by Carl Sagan: If we teach only the findings and products of science, no matter how useful and even inspiring they may be, without communicating its critical method, how can the average person possibly distinguish science from pseudoscience?

[00:04:55.760 --> 00:04:59.040] Science is so much more than a bunch of facts to memorize.
[00:04:59.040 --> 00:05:09.920] It's a process, a way of learning about the world, of trying to get closer to the truth by subjecting explanations to testing and critically scrutinizing the evidence.

[00:06:02.040 --> 00:06:12.760] And between fake news, alternative facts, science denial, snake oil cures, and conspiracy theories, it also highlighted the importance of critical thinking.

[00:06:19.880 --> 00:06:25.480] But when I think about my former baby bio students, I wonder how they made sense of the pandemic.

[00:03:04.280 --> 00:03:16.600] After briefly touching on the scientific method, the rest of the semester is a whirlwind tour of the major concepts in biology: molecules, cells, genetics, organisms, and evolution.
[00:03:16.920 --> 00:03:26.520] One of the most popular textbooks is over 800 pages long for a single semester for students who don't want to be scientists when they grow up.
[00:03:27.480 --> 00:03:41.240] I never liked this baby bio approach, and I was always searching for something better, trying out different textbooks, labs, case studies, and frequently using issues relevant to students' lives to teach important concepts.
[00:03:41.240 --> 00:03:47.360] And yet, my epiphany came while I was teaching how mitosis can help us understand cancer.
[00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:51.120] But the looks on my students' faces still haunt me.

[00:04:17.360 --> 00:04:24.080] This was the last science course most of them were ever going to take, and I was squandering the opportunity.

[00:04:26.720 --> 00:04:34.080] I asked myself, why are nearly all undergraduates, regardless of major, required to take science?
[00:04:34.720 --> 00:04:53.040] By chance, I stumbled upon a quote by Carl Sagan: If we teach only the findings and products of science, no matter how useful and even inspiring they may be, without communicating its critical method, how can the average person possibly distinguish science from pseudoscience?

[00:04:55.760 --> 00:04:59.040] Science is so much more than a bunch of facts to memorize.
[00:04:59.040 --> 00:05:09.920] It's a process, a way of learning about the world, of trying to get closer to the truth by subjecting explanations to testing and critically scrutinizing the evidence.

[00:05:36.760 --> 00:05:49.640] Instead of facts, students and honestly all citizens need the essential skills of science literacy and critical thinking that will help them navigate today's world and tomorrow's.

[00:05:53.720 --> 00:05:58.360] Not only was there a new virus, there were new treatments and new vaccines.

[00:06:02.040 --> 00:06:12.760] And between fake news, alternative facts, science denial, snake oil cures, and conspiracy theories, it also highlighted the importance of critical thinking.

[00:06:19.880 --> 00:06:25.480] But when I think about my former baby bio students, I wonder how they made sense of the pandemic.

[00:13:21.880 --> 00:13:30.440] This technique, called lateral reading by Sam Weinberg, is one of the most useful skills for navigating the digital landscape.

[00:13:34.360 --> 00:13:43.000] While it might seem like I took the long road, by first establishing why science is necessary, the logic of its processes falls into place.

[00:15:46.240 --> 00:15:57.280] While textbooks are full of the facts, theories, laws, and models at the center of the tree, the news often highlights what's new, exciting, and unexpected.
